We inform you of the new rules related to the use of the universal charger for electronic devices. These rules are intended to standardize and simplify the use of chargers, thus reducing electronic waste and providing consumers with a more convenient experience.
NOTIFICATION REGARDING THE UNIVERSAL CHARGER
eMAG Magyarország kft., headquartered in Budapest, Könyves Kálmán körút 34, zipcode 1097, Hungary, VAT number: 13282156-2-44, Registered with: 01 09 727285 as eMAG,
Considering:
- Directive (EU) 2022/2380 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 November 2022 amending Directive 2014/53/EU on the harmonisation of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment
- 2/2017 NMHH Regulation (I. 17.) of the NMHH on radio equipment;
- The rules regarding the sale of products on the eMAG Marketplace platform;
We outline the following obligations, starting from December 28th, 2024:
- All electronic devices must be compatible with the universal charger, using the standard USB-C port for power, including categories of products such as:
-
- Mobile phones;
- Tablets;
- Digital cameras: radio equipment includes any digital photo and video cameras, including action cameras. For digital cameras designed exclusively for the audiovisual sector or for the security and surveillance sector, the obligation to integrate the harmonized charging solution does not apply;
- Portable video game consoles;
- Portable speakers;
- e-Readers;
- Keyboards;
- Mice;
- Portable navigation systems;
- Headphones; headsets with microphones;
- In-ear headphones: the radio equipment is considered together with the associated charging case, given that the specific dimensions and shape of the in-ear headphones do not allow their dissociation from their charging case. The charging case for this type of radio equipment is not considered part of the charging device.
- Products must be clearly labeled to indicate their compatibility with the universal charger. Ensure that packaging and included documentation reflect this information.
- It is mandatory to inform customers about the compatibility of products with the universal charger. This can be done by displaying information on websites, leaflets, or other informative materials.
- If you sell chargers separately, they must comply with the technical and safety specifications of the universal charger regulation.
- It is necessary to report any issues related to the compatibility or safety of universal chargers used with the commercialized products to the competent authorities.
These new rules have been implemented to reduce the amount of electronic waste generated by old and incompatible chargers and to facilitate the efficient use of resources. They also aim to ensure greater convenience for consumers, allowing them to use a single type of charger for multiple devices.
Obligation to display the icon regarding the compatible charger
This must also include information about the charging power, including compatibility with other chargers, in the following format and with the following specifications:
- The letters “XX” are replaced with the corresponding value of the minimum power.
- The letters “YY” are replaced with the corresponding value of the maximum power.
- The abbreviation “USB PD” (USB Power Delivery) must be displayed if the radio equipment is compatible with this charging communication protocol.
The icon containing information about the charging power must be printed in the instructions and on the packaging or applied to the packaging in the form of a sticker.

Additionally, according to the new amendments, if the economic operator offers consumers the possibility to purchase electronic devices together with a charging device, then that economic operator is also obliged to offer them the possibility to purchase the respective devices without a charging device.
Furthermore, we specify that in the event of complaints or reports regarding the commercialization of products that do not comply with the aforementioned provisions, they will be blocked.
Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to complying with these rules. For any questions or additional clarifications, please contact the competent authorities or study the official documentation available.
